Ambien is a sedative that affects the chemicals in the brain that may be unbalanced in people who are suffering from sleeping problems. It is also referred to as Zolpidem. It is the most common treatment for insomnia. It has an immediately released tablet helps you to fall asleep when you go to bed. It also exists in an extended release form that has a first layer that dissolves fast to help you to fall asleep and another that dissolves slowly to help you stay asleep.

This drug may cause impairment of your thinking and reactions. You may still feel very sleepy in the morning when you wake up especially if you have taken the extended release tablet. You have to wait at least 4 hours after waking up before you embark on doing any task that requires you to be fully alert.

Ambien can cause a severe allergic reaction. You have to stop taking this medication and seek emergency medical attention if you have any signs of allergic reactions. These allergic reactions may include difficulty in breathing, hives and swelling on the face, tongue, lips or throat.

Some people who use Ambien have engaged in activities such as eating, driving, walking, making phone calls and even having sex and having no memory of it afterwards. In case this happens to you, you have to stop taking the drug immediately and talk to your doctor about taking another form of medication for your sleeping disorder.
Ambien tablets may contain lactose. You should thus be very careful if you are lactose intolerant.

To ensure that this drug is safe for you, make sure you let your doctor know if you are suffering from any medical conditions. Such conditions may include kidney disease, lung disease, liver disease, myasthenia gravis, sleep apnea, a history of mental depression or drug addiction.

It can be habit forming so it should only be used by the person who it has been prescribed to. You should not share it with any other person regardless of their situation. This can be especially dangerous if the person has a history of drug abuse or addiction. The person might become dependent to the drug.

Since Ambien is usually taken at bedtime when needed, it is unlikely that you will miss a dose. However, if you overdose, the first thing you should do is seek emergency medical attention. Overdosing on Ambien can be fatal especially if it has been taken with other medications. You should let your doctor if you are taking any other forms of medication such as rifampin, chlorpromazine and antidepressants. Symptoms of overdosing on Ambien include sleepiness, shallow breathing, confusion, fainting or in worse cases, coma.

Like all other drugs, Ambien has side effects. These side effects, if not treated can be fatal. You should report any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor as they occur. Some of the side effects of Ambien include chest pains, difficulty in breathing, daytime drowsiness, loss of coordination, stuffy nose, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, headaches and muscle pains.
